I just had a thought and can’t imagine that it doesn’t already exist:

People’s eyes are getting worse or better all the time. In our affluent countries this is often reason to purchase new glasses (i.e. a new frame and new lenses). What happens to the old glasses? Wouldn’t it be effective to collect these glasses (e.g. through a programme at different opticians), note their exact strength, and send them off to a needy country e.g. in Africa? The group of people in such a country that is unable to afford proper glasses could benefit from this virtually free supply of glasses and lenses.
Does such a programme exist already? A cursory glance through google does not reveal a Dutch programme of the sort. I’ll do some more detailed searching in the next few days though.

Na de tip van Ralph om eens op Mp3search.ru te kijken heb ik eens nagekeken hoe legaal de site is. Wat blijkt: voor Nederlanders legaal!

Zowel Mp3Search.ru als allofmp3.com zijn sites met toestemming van de Russische “BUMA/stemra”.

“Wil je als Nederlander downloaden bij AllofMP3 dan is dat legaal omdat de zogenaamde thuiskopie-regeling geldt: je mag downloaden als de muziek uitsluitend voor eigen gebruik is.” (bron: Downloadvergelijker.nl).

Mp3search.ru is de simpelere van de twee sites. Je betaalt per liedje, varierend van 8 tot 15 cent, of per album, rond een euro. De site biedt alle muziek in hoge kwaliteit aan (gemiddeld zo’n 192kbps met VBR).

Allofmp3.com heeft een iets beter download systeem, maar ook een ander betaalsysteem: je betaalt per megabyte en kiest zelf van welke kwaliteit de muziek die je download moet zijn. Hoe hoger de kwaliteit, hoe meer megabytes, dus hoe duurder. Je betaalt $ 0,02 per megabyte dus het is net als mp3search.ru spotgoedkoop.

Van beide sites vliegt de muziek razendsnel binnen. Beide laten je betalen met creditcard; je koopt eerst een tegoed ($20) en gaat vervolgens downloaden. Prepaid dus.

Wie wel muziek wil downloaden maar niet illegaal aan de slag wil, moet dus zeker even op deze sites gaan kijken. Ralph, bedankt voor de tip!

Now that 2006 has begun the last message seems to have been posted quite a long time ago. So a short post to let my blog know I’m still alive seems to be in order.
The weeks prior to Christmas appear to have been a month of hard work, not only for me but also for most of my friends. Nevertheless, there were moments of fun to distract from the daily hum drum. Roeland organised another one of his famous How to Host a Murder dinner parties (see the photo’s), there was the Japanese-style OPTA Christmas party (organised by Cynthia, Inge and me) in the Floow, and of course the holidays that make the end of the year so enjoyable.
By the way, anyone who enjoys Ethiopian cooking as much as I do should visit Djebena, an Eritrean restaurant on Noordeinde in Leiden. Nice and cosy, and excellent cooking (for a most reasonable price).
To end the year properly, I joined several friends (and friends of friends) in Antwerp, at the Brasserie Appelmans, where we had a fantastic dinner and a good party afterwards. For photographs, again see Roeland’s gallery.
